Parachutes: Things to know about your most important skydiving equipment
Parachutes are the most expensive part of skydiving equipment people need. They are also the most important. If you are planning to go skydiving anytime soon, there are things you should know about parachutes. A parachute may most certainly be the one thing that will save your life during your adventure in the sky.
Choosing the right parachutes
* A parachute has 3 important components: the container is the component which holds the parachute while it is in use; the harness attaches you to your parachute and lastly, the parachute itself.
* When you are choosing a parachute to buy for your skydiving adventure, there are a few things you have to keep in mind. Your weight is the first consideration as you need to buy a parachute that can hold your weight. If you make the mistake of buying an unsuitable parachute, it may cause serious injury.
* The size of the parachute you invest in is also very important. Size will decide how safe your flight is going to be as well as what speed your descent will be.
* What is the area of the parachute you are buying? Anything between 100 square feet and 280 square feet is normal. The thumb of rule is that, the bigger the area, the higher the weight it can handle. The smallest parachutes that are available can hold people who are less than 70 kg in weight.
* As said before, parachutes are expensive. A good quality new parachute will cost you upwards of $2000.
Tips on using parachutes the proper way
* There is no doubt that parachutes save people’s lives in emergency situations while they are parachuting or skydiving. But unless you familiarize yourself with the device before strapping on one, you are not going to be equipped properly. The parachute should fit you properly and you should also know how to store it. The riggers that will maintain your parachute on the ground are also essential to your safety.
* How long your parachute will last depends a lot on how you store it. When you are not using it, store it in a bag that is nicely ventilated and in an area where it is kept away from oils, acids or sunlight. If you find that your parachute is wet or has been in an unsafe condition, get it checked by a rigger.
* It is important that you know your rigger. If you don’t have a local rigger, ask the manufacturing company of your parachute to refer you one. Your rigger should know your parachute system well and follow the packing instructions properly.
* Every time you go skydiving, have a routine to check your parachute. Mildew, wear or stains should be looked out for. Check the snaps for corrosion and see whether they are functioning properly. Look for any missing or broken stitches.
Proper care while handling, using and storing of your parachutes is essential for your safety.
